2017 Audi R8 Release Date, Specifications and Price

Audi’s halo car, the 2017 Audi R8, apparently gets major overhaul just like what we’ve seen on recent Geneva Motor Show. Design-wise, there’s not much changes done in this second-generation R8. But, the sports car obviously has slightly bigger dimension and will offered in two impressive engine options, the V10 and V10 Plus engine. Let’s get into the details below.

Exterior

The new R8’s styling is a careful evolution of the first-gen model that borrows styling cues from recent Audi concepts such as the sport quattro that bowed in Frankfurt in 2013. The coupe gains a sharper-looking front end characterized by a wider rendition of Audi’s trademarked Singleframe radiator grille with honeycomb inserts, angular headlights and a deep bumper with two large air ducts accented by blade-like inserts.

All R8s come standard with LED headlights, and buyers in select markets can order Audi’s high-tech laser beam headlights at an extra cost.

Out back, the R8 features a pair of thin, elongated tail lamps, a discreet spoiler that automatically extends, a sizable air diffuser and two air vents that mirror the ones found up front. The V10 plus is nearly identical to the base V10 but it gains a bigger rear spoiler that creates additional downforce and carbon fiber trim on both ends.

The new R8 stretches 174 inches long, 48 inches tall and 76 inches wide, making it roughly the same size as the outgoing model.

Interior

Like the third-gen TT, the new R8 features a refreshingly clean, back-to-the-basics cockpit that is centered around the driver. The previous model’s center console-mounted touch screen has been replaced by a fully configurable 12.3-inch instrument cluster called Virtual Cockpit and a number of essential buttons – including the start-stop button – have been re-located to the steering wheel, freeing up precious real estate on the dashboard.

Audi knows that customization is important at the R8’s price point and it lets buyers choose from five upholstery colors and two leather packages. The cockpit can be further spruced up with optional clear-coated carbon fiber trim on the dashboard, the center console and the door panels as well as a new diamond stitching pattern on the seats.

Powertrain

The 2017 R8 will be available in two trims: V10 and V10 Plus. Both models are powered by an amidships mounted 5.2-liter, 10-cylinder engine, but differentiate themselves where power is concerned. The standard model is good for a stated 540 ponies while the Plus outputs 610 horsepower. The models twist their crankshafts to the tune of 398 and 413 pound-feet, respectively.

In the most powerful R8 V10 Plus configuration, the Audi goes from zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) in a claimed 3.2 seconds and powers on to a top speed of 205.1 mph. It’s quick, but it also should be more efficient than before. Direct injection, cylinder deactivation, and stop-start anti-idling tech should help the R8 to achieve up to 19.9 US mpg according to the automaker’s estimates.

A seven-speed S Tronic dual-clutch transmission is the only gearbox available, and when coasting, it can disengage both clutches to further fuel savings. Also standard is Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system, which defaults to 100 percent rear-axle power, but can send up to 100 percent of available torque to the front wheels if that’s where it can find grip.
