2016 Toyota Hilux Redesign, Specs and Release Date

Recent reports show that the 2016 Toyota Hilux was undergoing some testings in Australia while disguised under light camouflage. Current version of the Hilux trucks is only sold on certain area, but Toyota is planning to sell the Hilux globally. Some sources also told that the upcoming pickup truck is going to have a more spacious cabin. Power is also increased as well as its fuel economy thanks to the new engine options.

2016 Toyota Hilux Prototype Was Spotted in Australia

The lower 2WD model is wearing ‘Caution Left Hand Drive’ signage on the rear, suggesting that the mules’ presence is part of the new HiLux’s global evaluation. The HiLux prototypes appear to be wearing production head and taillights, with the 4WD mule wearing what looks to be a Toyota Genuine Accessories bullbar with added driving lights.

The frontal styling of the new model looks to follow the muscular detailing of the new Kluger SUV, while also referencing the full-size Tundra truck sold in the US. A deeper rear window can be seen, and the new model looks to continue with the current model’s slanted tailgate design, with the upright taillights featuring similar blocky detailing to the current Prado SUV. The taillights also appear to wrap around to the bodyside more than previous models, following a similar but inverted approach to the current Mazda BT-50. The two mules are pictured alongside a current-model SR5 4WD dual cab and Ford Ranger XTR dual cab, with the two production models likely being used by engineers as a benchmark for the new model.

This is one sector that the giant car producer has remained tight lipped about. However, given the demand by people for comfort, it is without a doubt that the company will have a luxuriously finished interior and one that will be spacious. This is more so considering that the luggage space looks reduced. This will not only allow the buyers of the 2016 Toyota Hilux to carry their family around but to do so in comfort which is what really matters. Needless to mention, space plays a primary role in that comfort being achieved.

Just as we said, engine wise there will be some major changes. There are going to be new engines as well as carried over engines from the previous generation. The most likely engine to be carried over will be the 2.7 liter inline 4 with nearly 180 horsepower and 188 lb-ft of torque. The new engine will be in the form of a new diesel engine that will be based on the new Cummins 5 liter V8. This one will get 2.8 liters in displacement and it will make around 160 horsepower and more than 300 lb-ft of torque, meaning it will actually have more torque than the current 3 liter turbo-diesel but less power. Luckily though it will be much more fuel efficient, so expect it to use around 10% less fuel.

Transmission wise, the old 5 and 4 speed automatics as well as the 5 speed manual will be gone in the favor of all new gearboxes. These will be a 6 speed manual and a 6 speed automatic that will be available both with rear wheel drive and all wheel drive. The latter will also get new electronic differentials that will allow the new Hilux to be just as good off-road as the old model.
