2016 Mercedes-Benz G65 AMG SUV Release Date and Review

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the 2016 Mercedes-Benz G65 AMG SUV is going to arrive to U.S. market as 2016 model year. Since its first debut in 2012, the high performance SUV has only been sold outside the U.S. market. The upcoming G65 promises more power than the previous G63 AMG, powered by a new V12 engine should bring new exciting updates.

The stateside return of the G65  doesn’t come entirely as a surprise to us. When we questioned Dr. Zetsche, Mercedes-Benz CEO, about the G65 in an interview last fall, he told us, “the G-wagen side of our business is a small, agile entity with fast reaction times, especially with such small volume . . . but I cannot confirm.”

Zetsche continued, “The brand is selling more G-wagens than ever before, and over half of them are AMG models.” Essentially, we interpreted Zetsche’s remarks to mean, if our marketing guys think you Yanks will pony up the bucks, we’ll start loading them on ships immediately. It’s worth noting that the entire G-wagen lineup is scheduled for an overhaul for the 2017 model year, but Dr. Z assured us it won’t lose its trademark utilitarian exterior visual cues.

Exterior and Interior

Of course, the G65 AMG is not just about a V-12 engine. Compared to the G63 AMG, the utterly powerful SUV is distinguished by a high-gloss chrome grille, exclusive 20-inch AMG wheels, and a more luxurious interior. The seats, the door panels, and the instrument panel are upholstered in Designo leather. The seats are complete with a diamond design with AMG headrests. Piano black Designo trims and Designo floor mats round off the G65 AMG’s bespoke interior.

Although that may seem steep, the G65 AMG is the most powerful SUV currently in production. The vehicle packs Mercedes-AMG’s twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V-12 found in the likes of the SL65 AMG and S65 AMG—and most recently in the S65 AMG Coupe. In the G-Class-based G65 AMG, the mighty motor is tuned to deliver 612 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque.

Drive in the G65 AMG goes to all four wheels via a seven-speed automatic, and accelerating to 62 mph from rest takes just 5.3 seconds—not bad for a vehicle that weighs almost 6,000 pounds. Top speed is limited to 143 mph.

Release Date and Price

For the U.S. market debut, look for the 2016 Mercedes-Benz G65 AMG SUV to be revealed at the Los Angeles auto show in the fall of 2015. As for pricing, Automotive News stated that the upcoming high performance SUV will cost around $250,000, that’s a significant price bump compared to G63 AMG with $135,000. Well, with such a big gap in pricing terms, it’s the G65’s buyers who can tell the real differences.
