2016 Mazda6 Coupe Specs, Release Date and Review

Recent reports said that Mazda will introduce the 2016 Mazda6 Coupe at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show, including updated Mazda6 sedan. That being said, Mazda plans to set the Mazda6 Coupe as a sporty car. This can lead to a different design style of the coupe, perhaps similar to what we have seen on Shinari concept car back in 2010.

The Shinari introduced Mazda’s current ‘Kodo’ design language, which first appeared on the new 6. However, unlike the concept, which was a four-door coupe, the new 6 coupe is slated to have a conventional two-door design.

The coupe will look similar to the Mazda6 sedan from the tip of the front bumper to the B-pillar, though it is expected to wear a noticeably sportier design. Beyond that, it will feature a pair of frameless doors, a sloping roofline and a revised rear end that could borrow styling cues from the Shinari concept (pictured) that was introduced at the 2010 Paris Motor Show.

The interior of Mazda’s midsize sedan will undergo major changes when its re-engineered 2016 model arrives in the first quarter next year. The sedan gets a new center console and a thinner dashboard that sits lower in the cabin — a change allowed by the use of a thin infotainment screen that will sit atop the dash rather than within it. The overall layout will be similar to the Mazda3’s and more upscale than the current Mazda6 interior.

The Mazda Connect infotainment system that debuted on the Mazda3 also will be added for the 2016 model year. The car will get a new front fascia, and LED headlights will be added to some trims, with sheet metal updates coming the following year.

The Mazda6 coupe will initially launch with the same engine that currently powers the sedan, meaning it will use a 2.5-liter SkyActiv four-cylinder rated at 184 horsepower and 185 lb-ft. of torque. Power will be sent to the front wheels via either a six-speed automatic transmission or an enthusiast-friendly six-speed manual unit.

The coupe will not be available with the sedan’s 2.2-liter turbodiesel in the United States, but a high-performance MazdaSpeed-tuned model is likely to join the lineup later in the production run.
