2016 Lexus IS C Convertible Specs, Release Date and Review

Rumors has been circulating that the 2016 Lexus IS C Convertible is possible to join the lineup. We all know that the IS model is considered as a very popular best-seller sports sedan, the upcoming convertible should give the Lexus a very well foot-hold in the sports sedan market. Even though it’s just a plan, we’d like to see the IS C as a real car on the road.

Our own Mark McNabb tested a 2014 IS 350 C F-Sport , and came away impressed with the drivetrain, luxurious interior, and power-folding hardtop. However, there is no denying the car’s age. Five years is an eternity in the automotive world, so Lexus needs to up its game and redesign

The current 2014 IS 250C, and IS 350C convertibles on sale are not on the new IS platform introduced a year ago. Rather, they are cosmetically refreshed versions of the IS convertibles that first went on sale in the US in late 2009 as 2010 models. Just before these convertibles were introduced the IS line entered its second generation. There were a few years of IS 250 and IS 350 cars in the second generation before the IS convertibles appeared. That could happen again, but Lexus has no real reason to create a gap. It could simply make enough of the current style to sell through 2016.

The current IS 250C and IS 350C cars are coupes. They have two doors, and they are hard-tops. They also don’t share many body panels with the sedans. The front of the cars and the windshields are different. It just makes sense for Lexus to move the coupe convertibles to the RC family, which of course, are coupes. Will they have the hard-top convertible roofs? Hard to tell, but all prior Lexus convertibles have. The SC convertibles had the hard-tops as the IS models now do. The flip side of the obvious advantages to a hard-top convertible is packaging. A soft-top takes up less space. They are also less prone to rattling and are lighter. Although the current IS convertible top is made from aluminum to keep weight manageable.

The 306-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 should initially remain intact in IS 350 C guise, and, more importantly the 2.5-liter, 204-horsepower, underpowered V-6 that powers the IS 250 C will be history, most likely to be replaced by the brand’s new turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four.

The new engine, which also powers the NX 200t crossover, should produce at least the 235 horsepower it makes in the NX , while providing better-than-average fuel economy. Small, turbocharged engines are the latest fad these days, and Lexus is finally in the game with its own design.

This exciting, new engine features direct injection and a twin-scroll turbo, and should cut at least a second off of the current IS 250 C’s lethargic 8.4 second 0-to-60 time. This new engine will finally take the IS 250 C out of the slow lane, while competing with the turbocharged engines BMW and Audi provide.

Release Date and Price

We expect that the 2016 Lexus IS C Convertible will be introduced sometime in late 2015 or early 2016.  Meanwhile, base pricing is expected to start from $45,000. To be honest, details are still scarce right now, but sure there will be more information as time progresses.
