2016 Land Rover Disovery Sport Specifications and Pictures

The 2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport is an all-new compact SUV, it was revealed back in the last Los Angeles Auto Show. At a first glance, the new Discovery Sports looks quite similar with the Discovery Vision Concept introduced earlier this year. Interestingly, the SUV has attractive lines which is different than the traditional Land Rover design styling.

Dubbed LR-MS, the platform underpinning the Evoque and this new Discovery Sport is loosely based on Ford’s old EUCD design but has been thoroughly updated. Land Rover boasts that 90 percent of the LR-MS’ components are new. Most of it is steel though aluminum is used in some areas to help shed weight. The Discovery Sport is expected to be bigger than the Evoque but its proportions and styling appear similar.

Exterior

The round, sleek and rather handsome looking Discovery Vision Concept previewed the majority of the new Discovery Sport’s exterior styling. The overall size feels compact and taut compared to the large and unwieldy Discovery, and it looks much like a larger sibling to the Evoque. This styling comparison is not by mistake either, as Land Rover is using the most attractive model in its lineup to inject some fresh styling into the rest of the brand.

The front is a little softer and more curved than what would be traditional for the brand, but it adds a modern feel and a sense of speed and performance. The new mesh grille is flanked by HID headlamps with interesting LED running lamps that are setup in a circle with distinctive points in them. Land Rover says the design is meant to create the feeling of a compass with the breaks in the LEDs representing the four cardinal directions. The rear lights are a similarly slim, wraparound design that helps tie into the overall look of the machine.

Interior

Inside, there’s standard seating for five passengers, but Land Rover calls the setup a “5+2” configuration with an optional two-seat third row in the cargo area. All models come standard with leather — lower trim levels get partial leather seats and higher trims get the full Windsor leather treatment, including a stitched leather dashboard and door panels.

Powertrain

The Discovery Sport shares powertrain components with the Range Rover Evoque, so you get a 2.0L turbocharged four with 240 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque available at a low 1,750 rpm. The 9-speed automatic transmission sends the power to Land Rover’s sophisticated four-wheel drive system. It’s also capable of 28 MPG on the highway according to Land Rover. Disco Sport has 8.3 inches of front ground clearance and ford nearly two feet of water, so it has plenty of off-road capability built-in.
