2016 Jaguar F-Type Club Sport Specs, Rumors and Preview

Reports said that Jaguar is currently developing 2016 Jaguar F-Type Club Sport, a lightweight and faster version the current F-Type Coupe. The Club Sport will have a reduced weight of 200 kg which means its total body weight will be around 1,465 kg. You can think it as the Camaro Z/28 of the F-Type lineup.

The guys at Motoring.com had a chat with Jaguar’s F-Type Program Director Russ Varney about the possibilities. Quite a few details emerged from the conversation, along with legitimate hopes Jaguar will actually build the thing. “We have three or four things we are looking at for the next developments of the F-TYPE and a lightweight, harder version is a long way up that list,” Varney divulged.

Sales volume is the foremost factor in a project like this, and as Varney mentioned, it would take around 500 cars a year before the project became viable. Cutting weight from the car would likely include heavy uses of carbon fiber, and at 500 cars sold each year, the cost becomes “quite cheap.”

Lightweight Bodywork

F-Type program director Russ Varney told Auto Express, “We have three or four things we are looking at for the next developments of the F-Type and a lightweight, harder version is a long way up that list.”

Weight savings could be achieved using carbon fiber body panels and seats, and the car is said to sport more aggressive bodywork and aerodynamics. But losing 441 pounds requires more than just replacing parts with carbon fiber bits, as Varney explains: “If you could get a couple of hundred kilos out of it, that would be a special car. We won’t get any weight savings of significance by looking at any one thing, so it has to be holistic across every part, and that’s a lot of engineering.”

Under the hood, the F-Type Club Sport will be powered by a V8 engine as well as a V6 engine. Currently, Jaguar offers the F-Type R Coupe, which is powered by the 5.0-liter supercharged petrol V8 engine that develops 550 PS and 680 Nm of torque, which pushes the vehicle from 0 to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds and to a top speed of 300 km/h or 186 mph.

Jaguar also offers a 3.0-liter V6 supercharged engine on the F-Type S Coupe, that generates 380 PS and 460 Nm of torque. The F-Type S Coupe hits 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, while the top speed is electronically limited at 161 mph or 275 km/h.

Varney ended his chat by saying Jaguar would not be following in Lamborghini’s footsteps with making a Club Sport-style roadster. “The coupe is already 33 pounds lighter and people who want these kinds of cars don’t want it as a roadster.”

Release Date and Price

Jaguar hasn’t released any further information regarding its release date nor the base price. We expect that the 2016 Jaguar F-Type Club Sport will make its debut sometime in 2015 as 2016 model year. As for pricing, we don’t have much to say but we believe that more information should be available as development progresses.
