2016 Audi RS7 Redesign, Specifications and Review

The 2016 Audi RS7 was introduced at the last 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. New in the American version of the sportback is minor cosmetic changes (but quite noticeable), you can see that its grille and headlights get some minor treatments. The most significant change will be its engine, the U.S. version gets even more powerful engine than its European siblings.

Primarily based on the modular longitudinal MLB platform, the 2016 Audi S7 has mild and exact steering, and the automobile as an entire feels a lot smaller than it’s whereas cornering, thanks largely to the close to-telepathic sports activities differential. That piece goals to sharpen flip-in and mitigate the understeer inherent in a entrance-drive-based mostly platform—the 2016 Audi S7 has Quattro all-wheel drive as customary—by routing torque backwards and forwards between the rear wheels as wanted to keep up a selected driving line.

Exterior

At the nose of the new S6 and S7 you’ll find the same set of updates: the grille gets some new depth and slightly altered dimensions, as well as a chromed treatment (which can be optionally deleted for gloss black); the front splitter is slightly reshaped. The headlights get new daytime running light accents, as well. As a result of these changes, Audi says everything at the front, below the hood cut line, is new.

Swinging around to the rear of the car, a new honeycomb mesh insert in the rear bumper accents the S6 and S7’s sportiness; the S7 gets new trapezoidal exhaust outlets, while the S6 gets redesigned quad round outlets; and the tail lights are entirely new, just as they are on the new A6 and A7.

Interior

Whether Premium Plus or Prestige trim, the cabins of the Audi A7 and hotter S7 also come in for cosmetic enhancements in the form of new Flint gray and Cedar brown leather on the A7 and spicy Arras red trimout on the S7, the latter rendered in a bespoke cross-stitch sew pattern. For more soothing travel in either, buyers can step up to fully ventilated comfort seats that also include a programmable 5-mode massage capability. Also new to the mix is an upgraded MMI voice-controlled navigation plus system with MMI touch displays linked to a power-retractable, 8.0-inch monitor. The Modular Infotainment Platform features standard Audi connect and internet via a 4G LTE connection that brings an integrated Wi-Fi hotspot for up to eight devices.

Powertrain

Under the hood, the S7’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 has gone to the gym, muscling up from 420 horsepower to a nice, fat 450. Torque is unchanged, but 406 lb-ft should do the trick for just about anyone. If the engine sounds familiar, that’s because it spreads far and wide across the Audi lineup (as well as Bentley), finding a home in the engine bay of the S6 and RS7, among other models. But it has a different, less rowdy character here than in the RS car. The power is delivered forcefully, sure, but without the raucous bellow and rawness of the RS7. Its smooth and seamless character belies how quick this car is once you cane the thing, and the S7 charges easily up to a governed 155-mph top speed.

The shifts from the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic are crisp and ultraquick. It’s the only member of the A7 family that has this transmission, in fact, as the lesser cars utilize an eight-speed torque-converter automatic—a nod to buyers’ preference for smooth launches versus quick shifts. The RS7 even has the same eight-speed ’box, as the dual-clutch unit can’t deal with its additional 110 lb-ft of twist.
